Missing Snowboarder, 16, Found Near Taos
Associated Press
SANTA FE Taos Ski Valley's ski patrol has found a 16-year-old snowboarder who had been missing for more than 12 hours at the northern New Mexico resort.
Snowboarder Daniel Lopez of Santa Fe was taken to a hospital to be checked out, but he was all right, state police spokesman Peter Olson said today.
Lopez had been missing since 1 p.m. Thursday after he ducked under a rope used to mark out-of-bounds territory, Olson said.
Police used a helicopter in the search Thursday because it was too dangerous to go into the area on foot because of the potential for an avalanche.
However, Olson said the ski patrol followed his tracks and found him early today. He said it took a while to walk the boy out to where he could be picked up by a vehicle between 5:30 and 6 a.m.
The teen ended up at the south fork of the Rio Hondo, and followed that to within about two miles of the ski valley road, where he hunkered down for the night, Olson said. That's where the ski patrol found him.
