The officer who was involved in yesterday’s police shooting has been identified as Tactical Officer Mike Hill, police said at a news conference this afternoon.
Hill has been with APD for thirteen years and is a veteran member of the Repeat Offender Project, an elite group of officers who often work undercover and who track the worst of the worst criminals in Albuquerque. Police Chief Ray Schultz said yesterday that he had not been involved in any previous shootings.
Dennis Aragon, 41, was shot around 2 p.m. yesterday in the 400 block of Española SE after he failed to comply with Hill and other officers. At one point, he stopped, turned toward the officers and began to shoulder the rifle, Schultz said. Hill fired three shots, striking Aragon in the stomach.
Two other men were with Aragon at the time, but they were unarmed and complied with police orders to show their hands and get on the ground.
Aragon was taken to the hospital and expected to survive. He has been arrested 23 times in the past, and has spent three or four years in prison, Schultz said.
He was last arrested in February after a probation violation, and was released on Monday, police said.
Police said today that Aragon’s current charges could land him 20 years in jail.
