There were no surprises on the first day of the Class 5A state softball tournament.
Actually, there wasn’t much suspense, either.
No. 1 Volcano Vista and No. 4 Cibola rolled to mercy-rule wins Friday afternoon as the playoffs opened with single-elimination games.
The Hawks (25-0) blanked No. 16 Oñate 10-0, while the Cougars ripped No. 13 West Mesa 13-1.
Jade Gray, Taylor Sargent and Katera Eltsosie all hit home runs for Volcano Vista. The game ended in 4 1/2 innings.
So did Cibola-West Mesa.
The Cougars ended the game with an eight-run fifth inning. Brittany Baca and Emma Adams each homered and drove in three runs for Cibola, which faces La Cueva on Thursday as double-elimination bracket play begins in 5A.
The Bears defeated Mayfield on Friday.
The first round continues today.
Valley, the No. 14 seed, travels to third-seeded Alamogordo at 1 p.m. The only other 5A first-round game that has yet to be played is No. 9 Cleveland against No. 8 Albuquerque High.
The Valley-Alamo winner faces Las Cruces or Hobbs next week.
Volcano Vista awaits the AHS-Cleveland winner.
St. Pius and Volcano Vista are both in action today in 4A’s first round.
The 11th-seeded Sartans are at No. 6 Los Alamos, while the fifth-seeded Jaguars are home to No. 12 Deming.
The state tournament picks up again Thursday in 4A and 5A at Cleveland High and at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Rio Rancho.
