Absentee Voting Starts for N.M. Primary

........................................................................................................................................................................................

SANTA FE (AP) — Voting is getting under way in New Mexico’s primary election although Election Day is not quite a month away.

Absentee voting begins today, but Democrats and Republicans also can start to cast ballots in person.

Voters often return absentee ballots by mail, but they can go to their county clerk’s office or a nearby designated location, obtain a ballot and cast their vote in person.

Early voting will be allowed at satellite polling sites in many counties starting May 19.

The primary election is June 5. Races for the U.S. Senate, Congress, Legislature and county offices are among those on the ballot.

In the 2010 primary election, absentee and early voting accounted for 35 percent of all ballots that were cast.
