Astorga Jurors To Continue Talks

........................................................................................................................................................................................

SANTA FE – Jurors weighing a sentence of death or life in prison for Michael Paul Astorga will reconvene this morning after deliberating for eight hours on Thursday without reaching a verdict.

The Santa Fe jury began deliberations late Wednesday to determine Astorga’s punishment for the 2006 killing of Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy James McGrane.

A Bernalillo County jury in 2010 convicted Astorga of murdering McGrane, and on two counts of tampering with evidence and felon in possession of a weapon. The state Supreme Court ordered that a separate jury determine the penalty phase.

Jurors earlier this week found aggravating circumstances, that Astorga acted with intent to kill a peace officer performing his duties. That finding cleared the way for a possible death sentence in the case.
