N.M. Mustangs Won’t Play in 2012-13

........................................................................................................................................................................................

There won’t be any hockey played at the Santa Ana Star Center this coming season after the New Mexico Mustangs were officially granted inactive status by the North American Hockey League, the Rio Rancho Observer reported.

The Mustangs, who played at the Star Center for the past two seasons, will not compete in the 2012-13 season and all tendered and veteran players will be considered free agents, the Observer said.

The 28-team NAHL is a league for 16- to 20-year-olds who hope to find a college or professional team to play with in the future, the paper reported.

The Mustangs just completed their second season in the league, finishing sixth of six teams in the South Division in 2010-11 and seventh of seven teams in 2011-12, according to the Observer.

It’s not the first hockey team to have a short run at the Star Center, the Observer said.

The New Mexico Scorpions played three Central Hockey League seasons at the Star Center from 2006 to 2009, then folded after the 2008-09 season when no new owner could be found.
