Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awards the grant to the Grant County Community Health Council

The Grant County Community Health Council will use a $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to help in the battle against childhood obesity in the county, the Silver City Sun-News reported.

The newspaper said the grant was awarded to the Health Council to improve opportunities for active living for families and to increase availability of access to locally grown foods.

The Sun-News said 84 percent of the county’s high school students reported eating less than five servings of fruit and vegetables a day and participating in less than one hour of recommended daily exercise. The newspaper also said that according to a recent study of body mass index in four grades in county public schools, nearly half of the students were overweight or obese.

Grant County was selected as one of 41 sites around the nation to receive a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Kids, Healthy Communities initiative, according to the Sun-News.
