ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Pete Domenici Jr., the son of longtime U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, is running for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
Sunday’s announcement puts the younger Domenici into an already crowded Republican race for New Mexico governor.
The field includes former state GOP chairman Allen Weh, Dona Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez, state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones of Albuquerque and businessman Doug Turner, who runs an Albuquerque public relations firm.
Political analyst Brian Sanderoff says none of the other four Republicans in the primary race are household names.
He says Domenici could benefit from his father’s fundraising contacts and connections with party leaders, but in the end must establish his own identity.
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish is seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
