PLAY Conservatory has announced its sixth annual summer project, Summer Stock 2012, to include three plays, all of which are New Mexico premieres: “Disney’s the Little Mermaid Jr.,” “Escape From Titanic” and “Go-Go Beach.”
In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice.
The aquatic fantasy features the hit songs “Part of Your World” and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.” The cast of children ages 7 to 13 is directed by Jonathan Dunski with vocal direction by Megan Rader and choreography by Susan Dorner.
Based on the Senate hearing transcripts and survivor accounts, “Escape From Titanic” is a memory play told through the eyes of J. Bruce Ismay, the president of the White Star Line at the time of the disaster and himself a survivor of the catastrophe. Now at the end of his life, he anguishes over his involvement as voices from the past torment him. This world premiere of Jonathan Dunski’s original play is directed by Ryan Morris.
“Go-Go Beach” is a musical fable about the shift of consciousness in America in the mid-’60s, told in the style of the popular California beach party movies. The all-teen company is directed by Jessica Barkl with vocal direction by Kristen Miller Hutchinson and choreography by Jonathan Ragsdale.
