3:55 p.m. – State Police have identified the man who died in a rollover near Moriarty this morning as 25-year-old Patrick Ortiz.
Ortiz was driving eastbound on I-40 about two miles west of the town when his pickup truck rolled three times, and he was ejected, a release from State Police said. It is believed Ortiz may have fallen asleep, since tire marks indicate he gradually left the roadway, over-corrected and lost control.
Ortiz was not wearing a seat belt, the release said, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
9:40 a.m. – Torrance County sheriff’s deputies are on the scene of a fatal rollover accident on Interstate 40 at mile marker 192 near Moriarty, KOB-TV is reporting.
When deputies arrived on scene they found the body of the driver of a car that left eastbound I-40 and rolled onto the property of Mountain View Elementary School and crashed into a tree, KOB-TV said.
Authorities were unsure whether the accident happened late last night or early this morning, according to Eyewitness News 4.
A second accident occurred as officials from the state Office of the Medical Investigator was removing the body and their vehicle was struck by another vehicle causing a second rollover, KOB-TV reported. One person was injured in that crash.
