Albuquerque workers have some of the best access to employment via public transportation in the country, a Brookings Institution study to be released today concludes.
Brookings found that 84.5 percent of the Albuquerque metropolitan area’s jobs are found in neighborhoods with public transportation services. That ranks the area 15th of the 100 largest metro areas in the country. The area ranks sixth in the share of the population that can reach a job within 90 minutes using public transportation.
Brookings said the typical employer can access only 27 percent of workers in an area within 90 minutes, while Albuquerque employers can access 47.1 percent of workers within 90 minutes.
Brookings researcher Adie Tomer said that even though unemployment is high nationally many industries have jobs to fill. “Expanding access to larger pools of labor (through transportation policy) will help fill those positions and improve economic performance,” Tomer said.
