Middle and High School Classes Start Wednesday

It’s time to trade in swimsuits for backpacks, as school is just around the corner for Rio Rancho Public Schools students.

The district’s middle and high school students return to class Wednesday and elementary students on Aug. 20.

District spokeswoman Kim Vesely said officials are predicting little growth in enrollment but will not know for sure until later this month. The district is expecting about 17,000 students, or approximately the same amount it had at the end of last school year.

Parents of elementary students will meet with their children’s teachers on Aug. 14 and 15 and should have scheduled those visits with the school. Teachers will also test students at this time to assess where they are in order to provide extra instruction when school starts, if necessary.

One change parents will notice this year is a later time for spring break. Spring break will be from April 8 to 12. In the past, staff has tried to schedule spring break at the same time at Albuquerque Public Schools in March.

The shift was made so the break happened after the state’s standardized testing period was over, and so it could take place during warmer weather.

In addition, most snow days are tacked on to the end of the school year instead of being dispersed throughout the year. The last day of school is May 24.

Meanwhile, Vesely said the district has updated it’s website to make it easier for parents to determine which school their child should attend. Parents can visit rrps.net and click on the “Back to School gateway” link in the middle of the page. The back to school page has links showing school boundaries and a link showing parents where their child will catch the bus.
