Atrisco Shocks Eldorado

Jaguars Score Late To Win 5A Debut

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

Shock the city. That’s what Nate Goode said.

That was shortsighted thinking. This one could be felt in every corner of Class 5A football.

Atrisco Heritage Academy’s first outing as a 5A program was a jaw-dropper. Goode’s 7-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass to Jeremy Sanchez with 6:52 remaining, and Goode’s subsequent PAT, lifted the Jaguars over Eldorado 15-14 Saturday afternoon in a season opener at Wilson Stadium.

“We had a motto,” Goode said. “Shock the city. Because no one thought we could do it. We just had faith.”

Atrisco’s game-winning drive covered 60 yards in 12 plays. On a fourth-and-goal from the 7, Goode rolled left and tossed to Sanchez.

Eldorado was at the AHA 35 in the final minute, but stalled there with an incomplete pass and, on the Eagles’ final snap, a lost fumble.

The Eagles got two field goals in the first half from Josh Pacheco, 36 and 25 yards. In between, Junior Campillo of AHA scored on a 3-yard run. That was set up by Phil LaCour, who returned an interception to the Eldorado 6.

Eldorado went in front 14-8 on Alan Evans’ 1-yard scoring run and Alex Ostrem’s 2-point conversion run midway through the third quarter. The Eagles started that drive at the AHA 22 after the Jags tried a fake punt.

Eagles’ coach Charlie Dotson suspended 28 players, including 16 starters, for the first quarter, for a team infraction that he declined to reveal. They were out of sorts the whole day.

Eldorado had almost as many penalties (13) as points, and almost as many penalty yards (149) as total yards (167). The Eagles also put the ball on the ground six times, and were intercepted twice.

“The kids were unmotivated,” Dotson said. “Our kids acted like they didn’t want to play.”
