Navajo Nation To Develop Ariz. Ranch

........................................................................................................................................................................................

FARMINGTON(AP) — The Navajo Nation has formally placed a 373-acre ranch it bought last year into the tribe’s land trust and plans to develop it for new homes.

The Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly signed documents placing the Turquoise Ranch property near Winslow into federal trust earlier this week. The tribe paid $1.5 million for the property.

Shelly says the expected development will provide homes for Navajos who were forced to move following the 1974 settlement of a land dispute with the Hope tribe.

Former Hopi Land Commission Director Roman Bistui tells the Farmington Daily Times that more than 4,000 families have relocated since the Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act are entitled to homes.
