‘Yarrr!’ It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Ever since 1995, when a couple of friends were playing racquetball in Albany, Ore., and one of them yelled out “Aaarrr!” when he got hurt, the two decided that on one day a year at least everybody in the world should talk like a pirate.

The game took place on June 6, 1995, but out of respect for the observance of D-Day, John Baur and Mark Summers decided to mark their new holiday on Sept. 19 — Summers’ ex-wife’s birthday which they thought would be easy to remember, according to Wikipedia.

Baur and Summers sent a letter to syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002, Barry liked the idea and promoted “International Talk Like a Pirate Day.”

Actor Robert Newton — who starred as Long John Silver in the 1950 Disney movie “Treasure Island” and was typecast as a pirate — is considered the patron saint of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and his West Country English dialect is considered the paradigm of pirate talk.

Instead of saying Hi or Hello today, a true observer of the holiday will greet his (or her) friends with “Ahoy, matey.”

And it’s AAARRR! or RRRR! or YARRR! or whatever floats your pirate ship.
