Calibers Shooting Sports Center Hosting Coyote Killing Contest

........................................................................................................................................................................................

(AP) — A shooting range and gun store is scheduled to hold a two-day contest to see who can kill the most coyotes in New Mexico.

KOB-TV reports that Calibers Shooting Sports Center in Albuquerque is set to hold the hunting challenge for two-member teams beginning Dec. 1. The grand prize is a pair of Bushmaster AR-15 rifles.

Caliber’s owner, Ryan Burt, said he came up with the idea after he was approached by several ranchers from around the state who have been dealing with coyotes harming livestock.

But Susan Weiss, an advocate for the “Coexist with Coyotes” group, blasted the contest. “Hunting to eat is one matter,” she said. “But just hunting for a contest I think is really immoral and disgusting.”

Coyotes have no protection under New Mexico law.

According to the Calibers Shooting Sports Center’s website, registration for the contest is $150 per team and all participants must be at least 18 years old. Winners will be decided by number of coyotes taken.

Coyotes have been spotted roaming along Albuquerque’s Bosque and in Placitas. They are also known to live throughout the state, especially in isolated regions, and tend to hunt a variety of different animals.

A coyote pack is typically three to eight animals, according to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
