Two Tucumcari teens were arrested Friday in connection with the theft of an assault rifle from a marked New Mexico State Police patrol car in September, the Quay County Sun reported.
Zach Hurd, 17, and Trenton Ward, 18, were being held at the Quay County Detention Center on felony charges of receiving or transferring stolen property, tampering with evidence and conspiracy, State Police Lt. Lance Bateman told the Sun.
The two were arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into the Sept. 2 theft of a Colt AR-15 assault rifle that was taken from a State Police officer’s car in Tucumcari, the Sun said.
Bateman said the rifle has not been recovered, but investigators determined that Hurd and Ward handled the rifle as well as other recovered evidence, the paper reported.
Anyone who handles the still-missing rifle and aids in its further sale or exchange will be subject to the same charges as Hurd and Ward, according to Bateman.
