Valencia County Voters Will Decide on Tax for Jail Improvements

County Commission approves all-mail election for vote forced by citizens group’s petition signatures

Valencia County voters will get their say on whether the county should have a gross receipts tax to pay for improvements and expansion of the county’s adult detention center, the Valencia County News-Bulletin reported.

The County Commission voted 5-0 on Wednesday to approve a proclamation calling for an all-mail election next month, the newspaper said.

The News-Bulletin said the commission had passed an ordinance in August establishing an one-eighth of one percent gross receipts tax in the county that would be expected to generate about $1 million a year to address overcrowding issues at the detention center.

But a citizens group wanted a public vote on the tax, the newspaper reported. As of Sept. 28, the County Clerk’s Office verified that of 4,105 signatures on petitions submitted by the group seeking the election, 3,219 of them were qualified voters — well above the 2,035 signatures needed.

The commissioners agreed Wednesday that according to state statute, they had no choice but to hold an election within 60s days of the certification of the signatures and decided to have an all-mail election as recommended by County Clerk Sally Perea on Nov. 24, according to the News-Bulletin.
