Water Utility, Kirtland reach jet fuel planning deal. Sort of.

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Albuquerque’s municipal water utility and the US Air Force have reached a tentative deal regarding the utility’s costs for dealing with aviation fuel leaking through groundwater from Kirtland Air Force Base toward municipal drinking water wells.

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility board, at a meeting this evening (Wed. 11/28/12) will take up an agreement under which the Air Force will pick up the tab for the development of a contingency plan to meet water supply needs should jet fuel reach the utility’s wells.

But there’s a hole in the agreement. The Air Force would not agree to pay for a $120,000 cluster of monitoring wells near the utility’s Ridgecrest well field, meant to serve as a sentry to detect contamination before it gets to the drinking water wells. The utility thinks it’s needed regardless, so it now appears Albuquerque ratepayers will pick up the tab for the wells.

The meeting agenda, with time, place, etc., is here in pdf form.
