A dry start to a potentially wet weekend

We’ve got a winter storm forecast for New Mexico Sunday that in most years wouldn’t merit much attention. But everyone I talk to is inordinately excited. Here is why, in three graphs. First, current snowpack (red is bad):

Second, for New Mexico as a whole, the first 11 months of the year have been the warmest on record (this data set goes back to 1895 – data here – you can play with the graphs yourself):

Third, calendar year 2012 to date is the warmest in history in Albuquerque, based on a data set going back to 1932. (The spaghetti plot show’s each year’s evolving average temperature history, going back to 1932. The maroon line on the top is us, now):
