Re: the recent commentary, “We’ll Have the Last Laugh, Liberals,” by Edward Glenn:
I felt compelled to read the article to find out just what Mr. Glenn is going to be laughing about. (His commentary) did reveal that Mr. Glenn is a proud member of the conservative movement, which is angry, white and male, believes in guns and the cross – in his words. Furthermore, he thinks that the secessionist movement is perhaps a viable action, that Fox News is the only media group that tells the truth, as well as something about not wanting the government telling us what to do – unless you are a pregnant woman – and he is not afraid of liberals.
He is also very angry that the liberals laugh and make fun of the conservatives. How rude! I, being one of those liberals, could find laughable many of the conservative anti-science, anti-fact, anti-intellectual positions. For example, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), who sits on the House Science Committee and believes that the earth was made in six regular days and it is only 9,000 years old. Or the “birthers,” or the hypocritical GOP senators and representatives who spout “family values” – think Newt – and the climate change deniers, or the “don’t want to spend taxpayers’ money on abortions/sanctity of human life” group that never seems to have a problem spending billions of taxpayers’ money on bogus unnecessary wars that kill tens of thousands of innocent lives. Then there’s Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-MN) family counseling business, which has a program to “Pray Away The Gay,” sometimes billed to Medicaid.
I could go on, but the point is clear. However, these are not laughable things, given that they are coming from elected officials in positions of power. No, these ideas and actions are not laughable, but rather appalling, hypocritical and scary.
The point, Mr. Glenn and all of the extreme conservatives, is that liberals may have been laughing at the results of the election, but it was not a joyous laughter. Rather, it is the laughter of relief that happens when someone escapes a near fatal incident, but is still in much danger. You scare us and much as we scare you, and you are indeed scared if not paranoid.
Finally Mr. Glenn, you and the people like you will not “prevail,” whatever that means. You see, fear-based hatred and ignorance always loses in the long run. Hopefully you radical, poorly informed obstructionists will cause the GOP to self-destruct and a moderate, rational, Republican party will emerge that wants to do things that are good for the country instead of supporting personal religious ideology. Then, that might be a time for cheering and maybe some laughing too.
