Matadors’ Depth, Balance Spark Win

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The Sandia High School boys basketball team is off to a surprising 6-1 start.

The Matadors will happily confirm as much.

“I didn’t think we’d be 6-1, to be quite honest,” Matadors coach Alvin Broussard said. “I thought we’d be solid. I thought we’d be a good team. I thought we’d be competitive. It’s exciting, and I’m excited for them.”

Sandia’s fast, first three weeks continued Saturday afternoon, when the Matadors’ size, depth and balance were, collectively, the difference in an 84-70 victory over visiting Clovis.

“We are surprised, a little bit,” said forward Tim Brennan, who led Sandia with 23 points. “We thought it would take time to learn our new system.”

With the graduation of guards Isaiah Rogers and Javon Brown, Broussard and the Matadors rebooted in the offseason. The absence of two excellent playmaking guards left Sandia with a larger lineup and a necessary shift in philosophy. Consider that in Saturday’s impressive win, the Matadors scored 84 points without a 3-pointer.

“No disrespect to Javon and Isaiah, but this team is much better than the team they had last year,” Clovis coach Matt King said. “They play together and they share it, and Alvin’s doing a great job with them.”

The Wildcats (3-2) were only marginally in this game, and that was early when they erased a 10-point deficit in the second quarter.

Sparked by Brennan and Joe Kerwin, Sandia closed the first half on a strong 16-1 run, and led 45-29 at halftime.

Clovis was plagued with foul trouble throughout. The teams combined for 56 fouls and 83 free throws.
