An American Airlines flight to Dallas returned to the Durango-La Plata County Airport on Sunday after the fuel cap dislodged shortly after takeoff, airline officials told The Durango Herald.
The flight left Durango at 12:35 p.m. and returned to the airport at 12:56 p.m., The Herald said.
The captain decided to turn back to Durango as a precaution when cockpit indicators made him aware of the dislodged fuel cap, American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller told the paper.
“This is a very rare occurrence and is not a safety-of-flight issue,” Miller told The Herald.
The fuel cap is primarily used to deep debris out of the fuel tank rather than keep the fuel in, according to The Herald.
The 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 took off again for Dallas at 3:09 p.m.
