Taos County Backs Forest Service Acquisition of Miranda Canyon Preserve

Forest Service has approached owners about purchasing the property and managing it as part of Carson National Forest

Taos County commissioners have voted unanimously in favor of a resolution supporting acquisition of the Miranda Canyon Preserve property from the Wiemer/Cunnyngham family by the U.S. Forest Service, which would manage the land as part of the Carson National Forest, The Taos News reported.

The County Commission, which voted Tuesday to endorse the move to get the property under the control of the Forest Service, had unanimously opposed a plan in July from Weimer Properties to build 150 homes sites on the 5,000-acre area south of Llano Quemado, according to the newspaper. An appeal filed in District Court by Weimer Properties is pending.

Meanwhile, the Forest Service, with the help of The Trust for Public Land, has approached the family about purchasing the property, The News reported. The newspaper said that according to Weimer Properties spokesman Todd Barbee, the company is considering the matter seriously as well as overtures from other interested parties.
