A committee hearing on state Rep. Miguel Garcia’s bill to require background checks for private sales, the so-called gun show loophole, has been moved to the House chamber because of an overflow crowd.
Nine states require background checks to buy firearms at gun shows or from private dealers. Five others require the checks at one or the other. New Mexico requires neither.
Garcia has said his bill would complement the push for more gun control at the federal level, which has ramped up since the shootings at a Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
