Ariz. eyes creating Hopi-Navajo county

........................................................................................................................................................................................

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona legislators are considering a bill to study the idea of creating a new county that would consist of the Hopi Reservation and the Arizona portion of the Navajo Nation’s reservation.

The Arizona Republic reports that the idea is prompted by a desire to funnel a percentage of state sales tax revenue to the tribes, which now do not get state tax money that gets shared with local governments.

If it eventually becomes law, the bill already endorsed by a Senate committee would require a study committee to submit a report by Dec. 31.

The Hopi Reservation is currently split between Coconino and Navajo counties, while the portion of the Navajo Nation’s reservation in Arizona is split between Apache, Coconino and Navajo counties.
