Nicholas Grijalva, 30, of Mimbres, has been arrested and charged with nine counts including child abuse in connection with the death of 3-year-old Alizandra Jasso, the Silver City Sun-News reported.
Grant County sheriff’s deputies were called to the child’s home in Mimbres just after 6 p.m. last Thursday after getting an ambulance call concerning an unresponsive child who reportedly fell from a dirt embankment, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The child was airlifted to an El Paso hospital with life-threatening injuries, and later that day, the sheriff’s office was informed by medical staff at the hospital that the girl was in critical condition with bruising and injuries on her body that were not consistent with a fall, the Sun-News said.
The sheriff’s department learned on Saturday that the child had died.
Deputies interviewed the child’s mother, Jaclynn Legarda, on Monday, and she reportedly told them that her boyfriend, Grijalva, had slammed the child down on the toilet, slapped her on the chest and face with an open hand, then slammed her up against the toilet and knocked her unconscious for wetting her pants, the paper reported.
Legarda told deputies she heard the child say “no daddy no” before she was knocked unconscious and that Grijalva picked the child up and slammed her into the shower door, then onto the floor, then put her on a bed and told her she was going to die, according to a sheriff’s report.
Two other children of Legarda’s, 8-year-old and a 6-year-old boys, told a state Children Youth and Families Department investigator on Feb. 9 that Grijalva had beaten and punched them, and that he and their mother had initially lied about their sister having a fall, the Sun-News said.
Both boys were removed from their mother’s custody that day, Sheriff Raul Villanueva said.
