7:40am — Carlsbad Woman Accused of Forging Dad’s Checks

25-year-old pleads not guilty to stealing checks and taking $3,400 in cash and goods.

Charlyn Shantel Barnes, 25, pleaded not guilty this week to six counts of forgery in connection with the alleged theft of checks from her father’s checkbook and using them to obtain cash or transfer funds amounting to $3,400, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported.

Eddy County sheriff’s investigators were alerted by the woman’s father, David Kidd, early last August when he found three pages of checks missing from a checkbook he used for his business and kept in his home, according to court documents.

Kidd told investigators he wasn’t aware the checks were missing until he was notified by his bank that his business account was overdrawn, the Current-Argus said.

Barnes had been living at her family’s home for a short time and had access to the checks, Kidd allegedly told investigators.

Sheriff’s investigators reviewed video footage of Barnes allegedly cashing four of the checks at local banks and using two of the checks to make fraudulent purchases at a local discount store by allegedly forging her mother’s name, the Current-Argus said.

Magistrate Judge Henry Castaneda this week ordered Barnes, who was arrested last week, held on a $2,000 bond, the paper reported.
