Breaking: Eastbound I-40 at Eubank closed due to blizzard

10:13 p.m. — Albuquerque police are helping state police shut down eastbound Interstate 40 at Eubank Boulevard due to blizzard conditions, according to the department’s Twitter page.

Blizzard conditions are expected through much of the state tonight. Keep with ABQJournal.com for updates.

Parts of the state received large amounts of snow and felt blizzard-like conditions Sunday, and sections of Interstates 25 and 40 were shut down in the evening in anticipation of heavy snowfall to come.

Four inches of snow fell on parts of San Miguel County on Sunday. Also, areas near Trujillo, Cowles and Santa Fe all got more than 2 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque. A section of I-40 east of Moriarty was closed, as were parts of I-25 between Santa Fe and Las Vegas, the service said.

But after Monday, the weather system bringing the snow will have all but left the state. It won’t be until Tuesday that northern New Mexico might get some precipitation, but that system is largely dry.

Albuquerque residents can expect a dry, brisk and windy day Monday with gusts reaching 30 mph and highs in the mid 40s.

Another winter weather system may reach Albuquerque on Thursday, a weather service spokesman said, but it will likely just bring more cold air. The coming weekend, however, might bring milder temperatures.
