Lost hikers found in Sandias

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A group of teenagers who said they were “lost and freezing” on La Luz trail were found by search-and-rescue teams early this morning, according to Albuquerque police.

About 6:40 p.m. Friday, APD Open Space received a search-and-rescue call for three teenagers lost on the trail, an APD news release says.

The teens, who are visiting from Missouri, were dressed in shorts and T-shirts and said they were on a cliff ledge wet and freezing.

They believed they were 2.5 miles from the trailhead when their cellphone battery died.

APD Open Space deployed two teams, one from the top of La Luz and one from the bottom. About five hours into the search, the teens were found, APD said. They were hypothermic and had no shelter or proper clothing for the environment, police said.

The teenagers were taken to rescue vehicles, which were on standby and treated. Around 2 a.m. today, the teens were reunited with family friends, and were able to call their parents out of state and let them know they were OK,  APD said.
