ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An 11-month-old beating victim is hospitalized near death, and police have arrested a teenage couple, including the boy’s mother, police said.
Police responded on April 4 to a report of an baby who was not breathing and unresponsive at a home in the 5100 block of Vista de la Luz NW.
According to a criminal complaint filed Thursday, the boy’s mother, identified as Hanna Smith, 18, was booked into Metropolitan Detention Center.
Her boyfriend, identified as Leroy Garcia, 17, was also booked into jail on the same charge.
Both suspects initially denied hurting the child, but the boy’s mother later told police that she believed that Garcia inflicted the injuries.
The complaint described the boy’s injuries as two skull fractures, a subdural hematoma, four broken ribs, a broken arm and multiple bruises all over his body.
The report said surgery was performed on the boy over the weekend, and though he is still alive, he’s not fully functional on his own.
Although Smith denied hearing anything, doctors told officers it was impossible for anyone in the house not to have heard something because the injuries were so severe, the complaint states.
