A Mexican couple has been arrested in New Mexico for allegedly selling fraudulent immigration documents.

Federal prosecutors say 40-year-old Carlos Chico-Salcedo and his 45-year-old wife, Juana Marin-Sandoval, were taken into custody Wednesday by Homeland Security Investigations agent.

Authorities say the couple is living illegally in the country. They made their initial appearances Thursday in federal court in Albuquerque and remain in custody pending preliminary and detention hearings Friday.

Prosecutors say Chico-Salcedo and Marin-Sandoval allegedly sold a fake Social Security Card and a fraudulent immigration green card to undercover HIS agents last month for $150.

They say Chico-Salcedo and Marin-Sandoval each face up to 10 years in prison if they’re convicted in the case plus deportation.

Authorities didn’t immediately know Thursday if the couple has attorneys yet.
