Aragon de Chavez drops out of mayor’s race

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Margaret Aragon de Chavez, a former first lady of Albuquerque, is pulling out of the mayor’s race and endorsing Pete Dinelli.

That leaves three candidates remaining in the campaign: incumbent Richard Berry; Dinelli, a former city councilor who served in the administration of ex-Mayor Martin Chavez; and retired police Sgt. Paul Heh. Dinelli is a Democrat, the others Republicans.

Aragon de Chavez said her campaign succeed in gathering nearly 4,000 signatures, enough to make the ballot, but she opted to pull out because of other obstacles.

“It’s going to be a very expensive race,” she said. “It was a hard decision to make, but I think it’s the right one. I’ve learned a lot.”

Aragon de Chavez is a professional development trainer at the state Children, Youth and Families Department. She and ex-Mayor Chavez used to be married.
