Bernalillo County commissioner just voted 3-2 along party lines to increase the minimum wage to $8.50 an hour, following about 90 minutes of debate and testimony.
Both supporters and opponents marshaled their forces. About 40 people signed up to testify, and cheers and jeers erupted as the commission voted.
In favor were Democrats Art De La Cruz, who sponsored the bill; Debbie O’Malley and Maggie Hart Stebbins. Opposed were Republicans Wayne Johnson and Lonnie Talbert.
Johnson and Talbert tried repeatedly to amend the ordinance in various ways, but each proposal was shot down on 3-2 votes.
I’ll have a full story in tomorrow’s explaining how the ordinance differs from Albuquerque’s and what each side had to say.
