ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Madison Middle School teacher has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation of alleged employee misconduct involving a high school student, according to a letter sent Tuesday to school staff and parents.
In the letter, Madison principal Marcie Johnson identified the teacher as Susan Stearns and said the student involved is not a Madison student.
“As you know, we take all these sorts of allegations seriously and work with APS Human Resources to resolve them as quickly as possible,” Johnson wrote in the letter.
Stearns referred comment to her attorney, who did not return a Tuesday evening phone call.
Johnson’s letter did not go into detail, but Albuquerque police spokeswoman Tasia Martinez said police are looking into an allegation that Stearns had an inappropriate relationship with a male high school student from the Albuquerque area.
Asked whether that would constitute a crime, she said, “That’s something we have to determine as we go along.”
