Eighth-seeded singles player Sean Gabaldon was out to spark inspiration into his Rio Rancho High School tennis team Wednesday morning, when he began the Class 5A state tennis tournament against unseeded Alex Salmon of Hobbs.
The e Class 5A tournament is being contested at the Jerry Cline Complex, off Louisiana Blvd. NE, and south of I-40, in Albuquerque.
If victorious, Gabaldon will meet top-seeded Shepard Moore of Sandia in a quarterfinal match Thursday morning at 11.
Coach Gordon Douglas and the 10th-seeded Rams open the team competition Friday morning against Alamogordo, the No 7 seed. The singles competition begins at 8 and the doubles competition starts at 9:30.
The Rams boys team did not advance any doubles teams into the state doubles tournament, although the RRHS girls have an unseeded tandem, Hayley Davidson and Jordan Von Unschuld, who finished third in last week’s District 1-5A tournament.
Davidson-Unschuld will meet seventh-seeded Kaelee White and Kristi Melot of Hobbs Wednesday at 3:30 in their first-round match. The winner of that match advances into a quarterfinal match Thursday at 8 a.m.
Cibola won the team title in 1-5A last week, while Volcano Vista was first and Cibola second in the girls team tournament.
Cleveland High failed to qualify any netters into this week’s state tournament.
