Man arrested after shots fired at APD officers

Several Albuquerque police officers responding to a report of a drunken man breaking windows were shot at by the man, who missed, during the early Thursday incident, police said.

Jason Halverson, 27, was arrested by APD valley field officers, who responded about 2 a.m. to a disturbance in the 500 block of Candelaria NW, according to a criminal complaint filed in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.

Halverson was charged with four counts of aggravated assault and battery on a police officer with a deadly weapon. He’s being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

The responding officers were not injured, APD said.

According to the complaint, police were called by Halverson’s father, who said his son was breaking windows at the back of the house. The first officer at the scene parked nearby and approached on foot. The officer saw the man moving between parked cars and yelled for him to show his hands. Instead, the man, later identified as Halverson, ran to a car, retrieved a rifle from the trunk and ran into the house.

As other officers arrived, the first on the scene placed his car to provide more cover. Officers beamed a spotlight into the house and Halverson fired a shot, which hit a few feet away from one of the officers. Fragments thrown up by the shot struck one officer on the left arm, the complaint said.

The officers retreated and found cover, as Halverson fired at least three more rounds in their direction, but no one was hit, the complaint states.

After about five minutes, Halverson appeared at his doorway and walked to his driveway, where he surrendered.

Halverson’s family told officers they called police because they were afraid Halverson would hurt himself.
