N.M. political consultant faces federal child porn charges

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A man who worked in New Mexico as a Democratic political consultant is returning to Albuquerque to face federal child pornography charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Mexico said Monday.

Jason Loera, 44, faces two felony counts of receiving digital child pornography and one count of child porn possession. The charges carry a possible prison sentence of five to 20 years.

Loera was arrested in Los Angeles. He is expected to be ordered by the court to return to Albuquerque to face charges for offenses the U.S. Attorney’s Office says occurred in Bernalillo County in 2009 and 2010.

Loera could not be reached for comment Monday.

Loera worked as a political consultant for the Democratic-aligned political action committee Grassroots New Mexico, according to records kept by the New Mexico secretary of state. Democratic Party Chairman Sam Bregman represented the group before he was elected party chairman in April.

Loera was listed as the Grassroots New Mexico media contact in a guest column written by Bregman and published in the Journal in August 2012, attacking Gov. Susana Martinez’s record on job creation.

Bregman did not immediately return requests for comment Monday.

Loera was released on $20,000 bail with an electronic monitoring device after appearing in a California court Monday.
