5:45am — Ft. Sill Apaches To Pull Bingo Machines

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Feds last month blocked gaming at proposed Akela casino east of Deming.

The Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma will remove some 50 slot-machine-like bingo machines from its proposed casino on its Akela trust lands east of Deming, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Tribal Chairman Jeff Houser said the Fort Sill Apaches had leased the machines from another Oklahoma tribe, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, which had deferred lease payments until June 10 to give the tribe time to open its Apache Homelands Casino, the Sun-News said.

But last month the National Indian Gaming Commission said the Fort Sill Tribe didn't have the legal authority to open the casino, the paper reported.

"The deadline wasn't met, so we're returning (the machines)," Houser told the Sun-News.

And casino manager Denis Floge told the paper that the machines would be shipped back this week.

Houser said the tribe is still pursuing a gaming operation, the Sun-News said.
