Swisstack-Tom-newNext week on Independence Day and continuing through the weekend, a variety of events will be taking place for residents to take in and enjoy.

Activities kick off on Thursday, July 4, at 10 a.m. with a parade down Southern Boulevard from Country Club Drive and ending on Pinetree Road at the Veterans Monument Park. Children and their parents are encouraged to participate in the parade by riding decorated bicycles. Bike registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the Bank of America parking lot at the corner of Southern Boulevard and Country Club Drive. Prizes in three different age groups — ages 5 to 7, 8 to 10, and 11 to 15 — will be awarded to the bike that is decorated the best, most patriotic, and most original.

Immediately following the parade, a public ceremony will take place at the Veterans Monument Park, marking the 237th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

For those wanting to watch or participate in some fast-paced and exciting football action, the 5th Annual Corbin Hayes Flag Football Tournament is happening from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Rio Rancho High School Football Stadium on July 4.

Independence Day would not be complete without fireworks, and the Rio Rancho High School Football Stadium will be the best venue to enjoy one of New Mexico’s biggest and best fireworks shows on July 4 at about 9 p.m. There is no admission fee for the fireworks show, and parking will be available at the high school and the adjacent Rio Rancho Aquatic Center, Loma Colorado Main Library and Loma Colorado Park for a $5 fee benefiting the Rio Rancho and Cleveland high school booster clubs. Also at the high school, a family-friendly movie will be shown on an outdoor screen beginning about 8:15 p.m. A 30-minute intermission in the showing of the movie will take place at 9 p.m. so that spectators can enjoy the fireworks show.

For parade and flag football tournament registration and fee information, and other Independence Day event information, please contact the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department at 891-5015 or visit the city’s website (www.ci.rio-rancho.nm.us) and click on the “4th of July Events” link located on the left side of the main home page.

After a day of Fourth of July activities, citizens can enjoy world-class barbecue and more at the 10th Annual Pork & Brew from July 5-7 inside and outside the Santa Ana Star Center. The event also features arts and crafts vendors, popular beers, local micro-brews and live entertainment. For kids, a full range of fun jumps and water slides and a variety of tasty treats will be available. The per day admission prices for the event are $5 for general admission; free for ages 3 and under; $3 for ages 4 to 12; and $3 for those ages 65 and older. For more information, visit rioranchonm.org/porkandbrew or contact the Rio Rancho Convention and Visitors Bureau at 891-7258.

On behalf of the entire Rio Rancho Governing Body, have a happy and safe Independence Day and holiday weekend.
