Suspect in stabbing death ruled competent

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Jeremiah Gurule, charged with the 2010 stabbing death of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Brito, was deemed competent to stand trial Wednesday by 2nd Judicial District Judge Briana Zamora.

Gurule, 25, has been in custody since turning himself in to police a day after the 22-year-old woman’s body was found in the couple’s home on Gretta NE in April 2010.

Two psychologists testified at Wednesday’s hearing that he was competent. Prosecutors said the testimony suggested Gurule, who has been at the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute in Las Vegas, N.M., for testing and evaluation, was now malingering and faking auditory and visual halluciations.

Gurule previously was found incompetent, and prosecutors stipulated to that while the defense stipulated to his dangerousness. Another evaluation ordered in July 2012 found him competent. Trial is now tentatively set for December.
