ABQ Convention Center shows off new ballroom

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The first phase of a $20 million renovation of the Albuquerque Convention Center is complete, just in time for tomorrow’s joint meeting of ichthyologists and herpetologists, who will hold a convention there.

The completed renovations include a massive, spruced-up ballroom light by LEDs that can provide a vast array of color combinations. The ballroom has new ceilings, wall and floor treatments and other improvements.

More work is on the way. In September, crews are expected to start construction on the second phase, which will include a balcony that can hold 600 people, a new facade and a New Mexico-style “living room” inside the center.

Mayor Richard Berry and other dignitaries held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate this afternoon.

“We’re trying to make smart public-sector investments on behalf of the citizens of Albuquerque,” Berry said.
