New Mexico’s unemployment rate ticks up in June

........................................................................................................................................................................................

New Mexico gained jobs in most industries between June 2012 and last month, even while its unemployment rate increased slightly to 6.8 percent in June from 6.7 percent in May of this year.
In fact, unemployment rates rose in 28 U.S. states last month, partly because more Americans started looking for work and not all of them found jobs.
The Labor Department says unemployment rates fell in 11 states and were unchanged in another 11.
Nationally, the unemployment rate remained 7.6 percent in June, even though employers added 195,000 jobs.
New Mexico added 8,100 jobs in the 12-month period that ended in June and 1,500 jobs between May and June this year.
New Mexico’s long-troubled construction sector added 1,700 jobs year-over-year in June. The state’s financial sector added 2,300 jobs, education and health services added 1,600 jobs and leisure and hospitality added 4,200 jobs.
Professional and business services, a sector regarded by labor economists as an important indicator of the economy’s health, added 900 jobs in the 12-month period. Employment in the mining and logging sector, which includes oil and natural gas production, and in the information sector grew slightly over the year.
Only the manufacturing, government and trade, transportation and utilities sectors lost jobs. Government employment over the year was down 3,400 jobs, and manufacturing lost 1,100 jobs.
Two-thirds of the states added jobs in June. Massachusetts, Maryland and Georgia were among the states where the unemployment rate rose even though they added jobs.
