7:40am — Bodies Found in Desert

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Two found separately near border in southern Luna County.

Border Patrol agents on Friday found the bodies of two men believed to be Mexican immigrants about 10 to 12 miles apart in remote areas of southern Luna County, the Deming Headlight reported today on its Web site.

Authorities said the two — whose names have not been released — were probably crossing the desert from Mexico separately, one in the company of two others and the second man was walking with a relative, the Headlight reported.

Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier told the Headlight one man was in his 30s and authorities were still trying to determine the age of the second man.

"We think the heat had something to do with their deaths," Mosier told the paper. "They are being taken to Albuquerque for autopsy."

The men are believed to be the third and fourth would-be border crossers within a month to die from the heat while crossing the southern New Mexico desert as temperatures near the triple digits, the Headlight said. Deming-area temperatures on Friday were in the high 90s.

Mosier said there have been 27 deaths so far this fiscal year in the Border Patrol’s El Paso sector, which includes all of New Mexico and West Texas.

"We had 31 for all of ’05," Mosier told the paper. "We’ve also had about 400 rescues of people in distress this fiscal year."
