TUCSON — Nick Geyer’s first-place finish Monday helped the University of New Mexico men’s golf team claim its first tournament of the year.
Geyer shot a three-round score of 9-under-par as UNM won the National Invitational Tournament at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.
The Lobos finished seven strokes better than their closest competitors, the host Arizona Wildcats. The team title is the first for the Lobos since the 2006 William H. Tucker Invitational and 14th under coach Glen Millican.
Geyer posted a tournament-low 6-under 66 in the first round. It is the junior’s first tournament win as a Lobo.
“It’s great to see all the hard work pay off,” Geyer said.
Geyer was one of four Lobos to finish in the top 11, with all five Lobos finishing in the top 20. Steve Saunders shot a 1-under 215 to finish 10th. Tom Carlson and James Erkenbeck finished one stroke behind Saunders to tie for 11th. Jon Sauer finished 18th.
“The entire team did a great job this week,” Millican said. “Everybody played really solid. It’s good to see it all come together.”
Up next for UNM is a trip to the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, next Monday-Tuesday.
