Eagles Will Play Las Cruces Today

Sandia’s girls were stung by the upset bug, too.

The top-seeded and once-beaten Matadors were toppled 4-3 in penalty kicks by No. 8 Eldorado in the Class 5A state soccer quarterfinals Thursday night.

Sophomore Kaley Smith’s goal, in the final round of PKs, was the difference. She beat her club teammate, Sandia goalkeeper Jordan Scott, for the game-winner.

The Eagles play No. 4 Las Cruces at 3 p.m. today in the semifinals. The Bulldawgs eliminated Hobbs 2-1.

No. 2 La Cueva and No. 3 Cleveland both advanced by 1-0 scores. The Bears beat Cibola on a goal by Sami Sackos, while Emily Cubbage’s tally propelled the Storm against Carlsbad. Cleveland and La Cueva also play at 3 p.m. today.

Bears junior forward Alysia Carrasco was injured after running into a fence late in the second half, delaying the game about 30 minutes. She suffered what is believed to be a lower back injury and was taken away by ambulance.

The boys’ top seed, La Cueva, escaped with a 1-0 win over Las Cruces on a goal by Carson Baldinger. But No. 2 Sandia was not as fortunate, falling 2-1 to seventh-seeded Cibola.

Casey Dean scored twice for No. 3 Eldorado in a 3-1 win over Gadsden, and No. 4 Mayfield ousted No. 12 Albuquerque High with a tense 2-1 victory.

In today’s 7 p.m. semifinals, it’s Eldorado-Cibola and La Cueva-Mayfield.

CLASS 4A: Fifth-seeded Los Alamos, No. 3 Farmington and top-seeded Albuquerque Academy advanced to the boys’ semis along with No. 8 Piedra Vista, which took out No. 1 St. Pius 2-1 in double overtime.

The Hilltoppers knocked off Roswell 1-0. The Scorpions edged Belen 3-2, while the Chargers got two goals from Darren McAfee in a 4-1 win over Santa Teresa.

The girls went according to seed. No. 1 Academy blanked Aztec 2-0, No. 4 Volcano Vista cruised past Del Norte 4-1, third-seeded St. Pius got two goals from Kelsea Gallegos in a 4-0 win over Moriarty, and No. 2 Los Alamos shredded Taos 7-0.

CLASS 1A-3A: The top four girls’ seeds — Sandia Prep, St. Michael’s, Bosque School and Hope Christian — all won by at least two goals. For the boys, No. 1 Sandia Prep, No. 2 Bosque School and No. 5 Hope advanced with No. 6 Rehoboth, which upset third-seeded St. Mike’s 2-1.
