A Homecoming for Pacheco

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Cameo appearance or not, Jordan Pacheco will take it.

Pacheco, the former La Cueva Bear and New Mexico Lobo, will be back at Isotopes Park this weekend — this time for the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies announced Wednesday that Pacheco will be in uniform when the team plays the Seattle Mariners in a two-game spring training exhibition series in Albuquerque. Pacheco was at the Rockies’ minor league training camp in Tucson when he got the news.

“I knew it was a possibility, but I was a little surprised,” Pacheco said in phone interview. “I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

Pacheco, an All-State player in high school and Mountain West Conference Player of the Year at UNM, was a ninth-round draft pick by the Rockies in 2007. He was converted from infielder to catcher in 2008.

“It’s given me some opportunities I wouldn’t have had as an infielder,” Pacheco said. “I’m liking it a little better every day.”

Pacheco rotated between catcher and designated hitter last year at Single-A Asheville in the South Atlantic League. He hit .322 with 13 homers and 79 RBIs in 117 games. He was invited to the Rockies’ Major League camp as a nonroster player this spring and reassigned to minor league camp March 17.

Pacheco expects to find out today where he’ll start the regular-season. He anticipates joining the Rockies’ high Single-A affiliate, the Modesto (Calif.) Nuts. But first he’ll join the big-league club for what he hopes will be a memorable weekend.

“They haven’t told me what to expect,” Pacheco said. “Hopefully, I can get a couple (at-bats) and maybe play a little bit. It should be pretty fun.”
