Does the punishment fit the crime? No, I don’t believe that, on moral grounds, UNLV forward Matt Shaw deserves to lose his entire senior season after testing positive for marijuana following the Rebels’ loss to Northern Iowa in the NCAA Tournament. A six-game suspension might be more appropriate.
Yet, for sheer stupidity, Shaw deserves what he’s getting.
No, he didn’t know he would be one of four UNLV players to be randomly selected for testing. Yes, he knew, or should have known, there was a chance he would be. He went ahead and smoked, anyway.
