Sandoval's 2nd Goal Is Golden in 2-1 OT Win

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Devon Sandoval's golden goal, one minute and 20 seconds into sudden death, lifted the University of New Mexico men's soccer team to a 2-1 exhibition victory on Friday night over visiting Fort Lewis.

Sandoval took two shots and punched them both into the back of the net against the defending NCAA Division II national champs from Durango, Colo.

The Lobos ended their exhibition season at 3-0. They open the regular season Wednesday at home against Saint Louis.

"We couldn't lose to Fort Lewis," Sandoval told golobos.com. "They are a good program, but a D-I program like us shouldn't lose to a D-II program."

Sandoval's first goal was even bigger. He pounded in a ball at the 84:30 mark to produce a 1-1 tie and prevent what could have been an embarrassing loss for UNM.

The Skyhawks' 5-foot-6, 135-pound Byron Cephers scored off a booming free kick from teammate Thomas Hoang.

The goal at 24:08 gave Fort Lewis a 1-0 lead it carried into the halftime break. UNM and Fort Lewis both took four shots in the first half with Fort Lewis getting two shots on goal and the Lobos one.

A good combination for the Lobos Friday in the exhibition match was Sandoval and Lawrence Robledo, who got both assists on Sandoval's goals. Both players are from Albuquerque.
