Women, Men Shut Out In Soccer Tourney Play

........................................................................................................................................................................................

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of New Mexico women fell to No. 7 Notre Dame, 3-0, on Friday as the Lobos made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

By losing in the opening round of the tournament, UNM ended its season.

It was the third time this season New Mexico was shut out.

The Lobos finished the game with seven shots to Notre Dame’s 20, and had only two shots on goal. Fouls were leveled at eight and the Irish held the edge on corner kicks, 4-2.

New Mexico finished the season at 12-3-5.

The Fighting Irish scored off a penalty kick by Melissa Henderson in the first half. It was only the second penalty kick taken by a Lobo opponent this season.

Notre Dame’s Lauren Fowlkes added two goals for the Irish in the second half.

LOBO MEN FALL, 2-0: In Sacramento, Calif., on Friday, Gyasi Zardes scored two goals as second-seeded Cal State Bakersfield defeated third-seeded New Mexico in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament.

The loss all but ended the Lobos’ season short of the College Cup, as the NCAA men’s soccer tournament is called. UNM most likely needed to win the tournament to advance to the NCAAs, due to an RPI in the 50s. The Lobos (9-5-5) team will await the official word Monday.
